Tomb Kings Chariots

Tomb Kings Chariots

I actually finished these guys over the pandemic, but given that was before I set this site up, and with the re-release of Tomb Kings as a part of the old world, I though now would be a great time to show them off!

This is just a breif post as I’m really proud of this very simple conversion and with the release of The Old World, I hope it might show some people that are worried about the old minis that they don’t have to look old!

The Conversions

So the Tomb Kings core models are probably as old as me, and lets face it, they look it. However, loads of the modern Tomb Kings kits come with plenty of spare parts that make updating the chariots a doddle. As you might be able to see all of the heads have been swapped out for spare Tomb Guard heads. On the unit champion I have also used the champion head from the Necropolis knights so that they don’t look identical.

The musician is also the Tomb Guard musician arm. This is also just more practical than the actual musician because there is not much space for both the riders to fit, and the horn pointing outwards rather than wrapping around just gives a bit more space.

I’ve also painted up a couple more that make use of the spare hooks from the Necropolis Knight riders, and I have used one of the spears as an additional weapon for one of the unit champions.

Painting

These guys were largely based on the scheme from the last version of the How To Paint Citadel Miniatures book that came out nearly 10 years ago (the one with the DVD). It was a good starting point but I wanted a bit more colour to it so opted for green as the primary and purple as the secondary.

Bone

As there is a lot of dry brushing on these guys, I would suggest varnishing after doing all the non-metallic colours. Drybrushing can get dusty and rub off the miniatures over time more than normal painting, and a layer of varnish will just keep everything in.

Green

Warpstone glow has terrible coverage. Unfortunately I started these guys long before contrast paints existed. However, to speed up the painting process, since I normally spray the whole mini in zandri dust first, I then contrast warp lightning over the green areas and then layer Warpstone Glow until I get a solid coverage. If I could start this army again I would use a slightly more saturated green I think.
